Water Loss Categories
Category 2 — Gray Water
Contaminated water from sources such as appliance leaks, washing machine overflow, dishwasher discharge, or aquarium ruptures. Contains chemical or biological contaminants that pose health risks.
Requires controlled cleaning protocols, antimicrobial treatment, and professional-grade drying to prevent escalation to Category 3.
Category 3 — Black Water
Grossly contaminated water containing pathogenic agents — sewage backups, flooding from external sources, toilet overflows with feces. Poses severe health risks including bacterial and viral exposure.
Requires full PPE, containment barriers, controlled demolition of affected materials, EPA-registered disinfection, and professional contents cleaning or disposal per IICRC S500 standards.
